2. Scissors are not the enemy!
In order for your hair to grow, believe it or not, you actually have to make regular trips to the salon to trim off those dead ends. Although these regular visits won't make your hair miraculously grow over night, they do prevent split ends from working their way up your newly nourished locks. Our top stylist advises a trip to the hairdresser every 10-12 weeks to prevent any ugly splits making it up to your root. Putting your hair appointment off for much longer than the suggested time will cause your hair to break off, requiring you to get a lot of length chopped off more often!
3. Leave the pony tails on the field!
Any girl loves to throw their hair up from time to time, but if your hair is fragile, dry or bleached this can literally snap the hair clean off. Our top stylist says this is called a "chemical cut" meaning your hair literally snaps off at the point of elastic. We will never achieve mermaid hair with elastic hair ties, instead use a bobby pin, material scrunchy or tin claw clip.
4. Conditioner is key!
Wash your hair sparingly, don't wash it every time you get in the shower, doing so will only cause unnecessary breakage and wash away your natural oils. Every time you do wash your hair make sure you use a conditioner to treat the ends. Our top stylist advises each time your hair is wet it must be conditioned at the ends. The conditioner helps replace proteins inside the hair strands as well as sealing the ends to prevent any further damage!
5. Ditch the bath towel!
Wrapping your freshly washed hair in a bath towel the size of your double bed will only do more damage than good! Avoid using a big towel to wrap around your hair as this causes so much breakage! Your hair will get caught up in all the woven fibers and those fragile strands will snap right off. Opt for the super-thin and soft microfiber hair towels instead, which are totally OK to wrap into a turban.
6. Treat your hair like fine strands of silk!
When brushing your hair be gentle, don't pull or rag the hair. This is a super is no, no if you want long mermaid locks. Use a detangling spray or a leave in conditioner along with a detangling brush for any pesky knots. Always work your way up your hair from the bottom and have patience being extra gentle to your strands of silk!
7. Treat your hair to a nourishing mask once a week.
We can spend hours in the mirror on make up and choosing an outfit, spare some of time to nourish and care for your hair. Use a treatment mask rich in moisture and mineral oils weekly advises our top stylist. Apply from ear length down, avoiding the roots, leave the mask on for 20-30 minutes and rinse out with warm water. Your hair should feel silky soft after the first treatment and you will find yourself addicted to it's velvety soft touch.
Our top tip is use the treatment conditioners in box dyes you can purchase from your local drug store. These are an excellent way to treat your hair regularly.
8. Eat the right foods!
Ever heard the saying "you are what you eat" that also relates to your hair. You're not going to get that gorgeous long, strong hair from eating junk food. Hair is actually a protein and if you don't eat enough of it, (protien not hair) you are on the highway to hair loss. Our top stylist says you need to make sure you are feeding your hair from the inside with foods high in protein such as fish, beans, nuts and whole grains.
9. Don't over heat or style!
Using heat styling appliances such as curling irons, tongs and wands might give us a nice curl for a few hours but the long-term damage is what we really have to look at. You can style your hair without using heat with little treasures such as: Curling head bands, no heat foam curlers (remember those?!) and curling rags. You can even plait or braid your hair when wet or damp to get a natural looking beach wave.
